The character:
David never intended to become Sheriff of Giles. That was his father, Donald's, plan -- not his. He dreamt of escaping the backroads of Giles to make a life for himself in a big city. He wanted to help people, yes, but not like his old man. He'd trade a badge and gun for books and kind words in a heartbeat. In his heart of hearts, that life outside of Giles would have been with Deirdre.But things didn't work out that way. David's mother died, hardening Donald further. Deirdre married Brennan and herself remained in Giles. And so, David decided to stay, taking up his father's mantle and putting his own stamp on it. Leading with kindness rather than coercion and empathy over enforcement.
